All Hail Intelligence

All Hail Intelligence

Last night, TV programme Horizon posed an intriguing question: how much do we know about intelligence and how accurate is the IQ test? This seemingly simple question was then explored in depth, with various different tests showing that actually, the IQ test barely scratches the surface when it comes to differentiating different bands of intelligence.

It will surely come as no surprise that the conclusion deducted from the research was that the IQ test is slowly becoming out-dated as a means of accurately measuring someone’s intellectual capability. But then, you have to remind yourself that the IQ test was invented way back in 1912,. It’s almost a hundred years old now: can you imagine if the rest of science had remained stationery for one hundred years? It does not bear thinking about! For example, if tins had not been invented, how would I have stored my delicious Coconut Water in my pantry? Indeed, a truly frightening conundrum…

Anyway, there were some intriguing findings, and one of the things which the programme explored was how some scientists are now exploring the idea that intelligence could be investigated in many more ways. This would make sense. The IQ test proves that someone is capable at problem-solving, but it in no way can explain how a person who is terrible at problem-solving can be a genius when it comes to putting words together or communicating through the use of mixed media or painting.

Of course, the IQ test will remain the staple for some years to come, but it isn’t too far-fetched to imagine that in a relatively short period of time, things could change again, and hopefully for the better.
